Gen Z Dating App Ditto Replaces Swiping with AI Matchmaking via iMessage

Gen Z Dating App Ditto Replaces Swiping with AI Matchmaking via iMessage

This generation of twentysomethings is so disillusioned with swipe-based dating apps that they are ready to try literally anything else—even an AI matchmaker. After dropping out of UC Berkeley, Ditto co-founders Allen Wang and Eric Liu set out to build Ditto, a service designed to help peers connect without spending hours navigating the messy UI of apps like Tinder or Hinge.

"As Gen Z ourselves, we were firsthand witnessing the behavioral shift in terms of how people are connecting," Wang told TechCrunch. "People are tired of endless swiping and small talk; they want something more genuine in real life." Instead of downloading a traditional app, college students sign up for Ditto by texting a code to a specific iMessage number. An AI chatbot then introduces itself: "No swiping, no awkward DMs, just real dates every Wednesday at 7 pm."

Users text their way through onboarding, starting with basic biographical details. Ditto then asks highly specific questions to understand personality, interests, and preferences—some users even upload photos of celebrity crushes to define their physical type. Rather than matching based on overlapping hobbies, the AI matchmaking algorithm analyzes what those hobbies reveal about a person's underlying psychology.

"If a guy loves rock climbing and a girl is into streetwear and skateboarding, they might not share hobbies on paper, but deeper down, both are adventurous and individualistic," Wang said. "That is where chemistry comes from." Every Wednesday at 7 p.m., Ditto texts users their match, complete with a time and location. After the date, Ditto gathers feedback to refine its user profiling for the next iteration.

Ditto has already secured over 150,000 signups. Notably, about 20% of all matches connected via Ditto result in an actual real-world date, a conversion rate that dramatically outperforms traditional swipe-based dating platforms.

[AgentUpdate Depth Analysis] Ditto's traction highlights a paradigm shift in Consumer AI, where friction-free, conversational AI Agents replace traditional GUI interfaces. By operating entirely via iMessage, Ditto minimizes onboarding barriers and shifts the cognitive load of searching from the user to the Agent. Methodologically, it demonstrates how LLMs can bypass surface-level metadata in favor of deep semantic and psychological profiling. For the broader AI Agent ecosystem, Ditto represents the vanguard of 'No-UI' execution agents. This agentic pattern—leveraging deep user profiling, offline fulfillment, and a continuous feedback loop—is highly replicable, paving the way for next-generation Agent networks in local services, recruiting, and personalized concierge markets.
