IBM announced a major partnership with OpenAI on Thursday to deliver the AI startup’s models and tools to more enterprise clients, leveraging #IBM’s global consulting reach as the race for corporate AI budgets intensifies.
While financial terms were not disclosed, this deal comes less than a year after IBM forged a similar alliance with Anthropic. The two companies will co-market AI services and build customized, industry-specific solutions for sectors such as finance, government, telecom, and retail.
As part of the pact, IBM will set up a dedicated #OpenAI practice within IBM Consulting and train tens of thousands of its consultants on OpenAI's tech over the coming months, focused on Codex, APIs, cybersecurity, and credentials. Mike Healy, managing partner at IBM Consulting, noted that IBM will also establish a specialized team of 'Forward Deployed Experts' via OpenAI's Partner Network.
IBM plans to integrate OpenAI’s cutting-edge models, including GPT-5.6, Codex, and ChatGPT Work, directly into its consultant AI platform, IBM Consulting Advantage, to help enterprises scale AI deployments across operational workflows.
This move highlights OpenAI's aggressive push to scale its enterprise business through global system integrators (GSIs). Similar to its past deals with Infosys and TCS, OpenAI is prioritizing partner networks to win high-value enterprise deployments over pure model performance races.
For IBM, the deal cements its model-agnostic positioning. By pairing its proprietary Granite models with third-party frontier systems on its watsonx platform, IBM cements its status as a premier multi-model integrator. This push is also critical for IBM to accelerate AI revenue after recently trimming its 2026 sales forecast. CEO Arvind Krishna maintained that AI continues to drive long-term business growth.
Crucially, the deal builds on their previous cybersecurity collaboration, OpenAI Daybreak Cyber. The new partnership integrates OpenAI's models into IBM Autonomous Security, IBM's pioneering multi-agent-powered cybersecurity suite.
