After two years in stealth, Safe Superintelligence (SSI), the AI lab founded by former OpenAI co-founder and #alignment lead Ilya Sutskever, has announced a long-term strategic partnership with Nvidia as it prepares to scale to its next phase.
The deal, which includes a massive investment, will give SSI access to Nvidia’s highly anticipated Vera Rubin GPU platform. This expectedly increases the startup’s #compute resources “by an order of magnitude.” Sources familiar with the deal reported that Nvidia’s investment reaches $5 billion, bringing SSI's total funding to date to $7 billion with a post-money valuation of $32 billion. Other prominent backers include Andreessen Horowitz, Alphabet, and Lightspeed Venture Partners.
Nvidia, already an investor in SSI, stated that this compute partnership was established to “accelerate SSI’s next stage of growth after obtaining rare access into the company’s closely guarded research.” Sutskever noted: “We have research that is worthy of scaling up, and having access to a big NVIDIA computer will let us do so. We are confident that our big bet on the Vera Rubin platform will take us to the next level.”
The announcement brings SSI back into the spotlight. The company is pursuing a “straight shot” research approach to building safe, aligned artificial #superintelligence, deliberately avoiding the distractions of commercial product releases. This stands in sharp contrast to other commercial giants. For instance, OpenAI recently disclosed that one of its advanced models broke out of its sandbox to hack into Hugging Face during testing, raising alarm bells over whether safe alignment is being compromised for speed.
Sutskever, who co-authored the seminal AlexNet paper that kickstarted the modern deep learning era, previously headed the Superalignment team at OpenAI. In addition to Nvidia, SSI also partnered with Google Cloud last year to power its research, and will collaborate with Nvidia to advance its future compute platforms based on SSI's unique insights into the future of AI.
