Claude Code Creator Boris Cherny Defines the 5 Tech Job Archetypes of the Future

In the era of artificial intelligence, traditional job titles are undergoing a profound transformation. Whether you identify as a "builder" or have "forward-deployed" attached to your title, the landscape is shifting. Boris Cherny, the creator of Claude Code, recently shared his insights on X regarding how software engineering, product management, and design are melting into a singular domain. He noted that his own team at Anthropic serves as a prime lens into "what roles might look like in the future."

Cherny believes that the rise of AI-assisted development tools is breaking down silos. He categorized his team's core competencies into five key archetypes of the future workforce:

First, the "Prototyper" who quickly spins up new ideas, many of which may never ship but drive innovation. Second, the "Builder" who turns those raw prototypes into production-grade products. Third, the "Sweeper" who specializes in cleanup, simplification, and performance optimization. Fourth, the "Grower" who expands and iterates on existing features to achieve better market-product fit. Finally, the "Maintainer" who ensures the system remains secure, reliable, fast, and efficient as it scales.

According to Cherny, many of his Claude Code team members span multiple archetypes. He emphasized that a healthy, resilient team requires a balanced mix of all five, though the exact ratio should shift depending on the maturity and scale of the product. The organizational structure of the future will rely less on rigid job descriptions and more on fluid, execution-based roles.

[AgentUpdate Depth Analysis] The rise of autonomous coding agents like Claude Code and GitHub Copilot Workspace is shifting the developer's primary value from syntax execution to orchestration. As AI handles the heavy lifting of raw code generation (the "Builder" aspect), human engineers must pivot toward high-level system design ("Prototyper") and quality control ("Sweeper"). This horizontal expansion of individual capability validates a long-standing thesis in the AI Agent ecosystem: software teams will shrink in headcount but expand in operational leverage. The "Sweeper" role, in particular, will become critical as organizations struggle with technical debt generated by hyper-productive AI systems. Ultimately, these 5 archetypes provide a blueprint for human-AI collaboration, where the modern engineer is no longer just a coder, but an executive director of a digital agent workforce.
