Sir Demis Hassabis last month declared AI had brought the world to a “pivotal moment in human history,” aware that a significant change was on the horizon. This shift, however, was closer to home, within his own organization.
This week, the Nobel Prize-winning head of Google DeepMind announced he is stepping down from his day-to-day duties as Chief Executive to become Chair. Concurrently, he will assume the role of Chief Scientist at DeepMind's parent company, Alphabet, signaling a new era for the AI powerhouse.
At 50, Hassabis co-founded DeepMind and sold it to Google in 2014, gaining the resources to oversee numerous breakthroughs. “The era of DeepMind as an independent actor is over, and the obvious sign is the transition from a charismatic founder-leader to appointing Koray in a non-CEO leadership role. Koray is a technical character, not an inspirational figure like Demis,” the former executive remarked.
The ex-Google employee also noted that it would be "galling" for Google and Hassabis that the latest iterations of Google's flagship AI model series, Gemini, have lost ground to rival models developed by US competitors Anthropic and OpenAI.
Hassabis expressed anticipation for focusing more on the "big picture" for AI, believing he is handing over operational management of a unit well-prepared for future competitive battles. Internally, DeepMind has faced political tensions, with employees raising concerns over collaborations with the Pentagon. Earlier this year, a former Google DeepMind employee launched a legal challenge against Google, alleging unfair dismissal due to views on Gaza. This individual was involved in unionization efforts amidst fears that Google's AI could assist militaries, including the Israel Defense Forces. Another employee resigned in mid-July, citing Google's work with the Pentagon and the US Department of Homeland Security. One told The Guardian that Hassabis's departure marked the "end of an era."
